Cant someone else do it? Part 2!

Hi all

Well it's happened again! And wow what an awesome happening.
The popular Blogger Nerdburger has seen it fit to review the Huggington 3.

When I first found out about Cazz Nerdburger, I pretty much binge watched her YouTube vids and read her blog, and I have to say I was completely taken back by just how positive and passionate this little pocket rocket was. Not only does she have boundless energy but she has found a way to be hilarious at the same time.

With that said.... I am pleased to say Cazz has turned all her awesome skill to making my toys look great.

Cant someone else do it?

Hi All
I know it's been a few weeks between drinks... I feel like a guy in the circus twirling plates on sticks. And for some strange reason I am not wanting any of the plates to fall.... strange because these are all arty projects which I am not obligated to do.... but since I have the idea (and it's good) I can't let it get away.

This week though, I am taking a small break from the blog because someone else has done it for me....specifically the all mighty Hoardax over at Hoard World blog has done an awesome spot light on all the toys I have released to date through my Huggingtons Twisted Toys brand....(Henceforth known as the Huggington 3).
Hoardax making me look good!

Please check out the links below for a review on the Pincer MD mini figure,  the Savage Bobby Pin and the brand new Franken Trooper.
and

HOARDAX has made my little pieces of resin look spectacular and I thought it only right to share it.

I must also take a moment to express my gratitude to Hoardax for taking the time and dedicating the blog space to my work. The Australian independent toy scene is somewhat small (as far as I can see) and its tough to create an idea without being able to bounce it off someone who really digs the artform. So its cool to know I have local fans who really dig the pieces I make and are eager for more.
I will try not to disappoint!

Stay Dead Knuckle Dusters Pt 2.

Last time I talked about the making of 2 pairs of knuckle Dusters for an upcoming Zombie Apocalypse (Art Show). This week, in part 2, I will have a look at the bigger picture, The art show that inspired the art.

There is something to be said about a gallery opening where you have work showing. Group shows are fun because I only have to put in the work that I CAN do and I am not responsible for filling a large amount of wall space with work.

A little too real!
Walking into Artboys Galleries “Zombie Apocalypse” was unlike any other show I had been to before. Mainly for the fact they had a cage of zombies in the window, snarling and clawing at you as you walked in. I can only imagine what unsuspecting passer bys would have thought that night.

Brilliant Sign by Tardis Guy Allan Carey
This time around I must say, without being burdened with the idea of selling my pieces, I was somewhat more relaxed. Not having to worry about if my pieces were worthy and not having to check back every 5 minutes to see if there is a magical little red dot on it!
This piece actually scanned you for infection....I failed

No this time around the night was about having lots of fun, Catching up with friends, discovering new and exciting artists and discussing upcoming projects and possible collaborations.

All in all… I came away from this night the same way I normally do. Feeling ecstatic that I have created something from a nothing idea to a physical piece but more importantly inspired but all the great art I have been exposed to. Both new and established artists continue to push the boundaries and impress..

And here we are

Thanks again to the guys at Artboy for putting on a great show and an amazing opening night.

Please swing by the Artboy page and check out photos of some of the amazing art which appeared on the night, as well as news for upcoming events!

Stay Dead Knuckle Dusters Pt 1.

I have so many stories to tell you guys, I have no idea how I am gonna get around to writing it all down. I guess late nights and (more) black coffee will be in order.
But right now I want to start with one of my most recent efforts, also let me state that since this blog will be like an anachronism, jumping back and forth in time at my command,  just remember it will all be ok in the end…. Like in Pulp Fiction when John Travolta was killed but then came back at the end of the movie…. In an earlier scene… Remember how happy you were then? (BTW, there is NO spoiler alert required for a 20 year old movie).

Art Boy flyer
When the guys Art Boy gallery announced the title for their next show it sent my mind into a spin.
“Zombie Apocalypse!”
What would I do? I dedicated so much time to perfecting my zombies a few years back, I still have all the pieces drawn on art board, in my garage, in glorious Black White and Red…. Pen and Ink… Stark, Tight, Clean lines. But my art has moved so far from that it wasn’t even an option to submit these. For some reason i have developed this strange need to be seen as having a consistent style and a bit of continuity in the work I produce… This urge was quickly replaced by new ideas, so far removed from anything I am currently doing that I just had to go with it.
Looking back on it now, I would like to say my idea came from a deep place, an idea that took the subject matter to a new and dangerous place, bringing the fantasy danger into the real world and making the viewer confront the horror and consequences of the world they have temporarily entered…. Blah blah blah….
The Truth is simply I had a cool idea to make a thing that would look good. The above is true, but having worked on this project for 10s of hours, I tend to get immersed in it and my mind will try to artistically justify the existence of the art within the world, or at least within the show.
Having not studied art past year 8, I don’t know if I am even allowed to say these things in public..  like a secret magicians code or something… but I have said it and you can quote me!

The subject of all this dedicated thought was a set of Knuckle Dusters specifically produced as a Last Resort… when all else fails… all other weapons have been exhausted and your only hope to fight your way through the undead by going on a Punching Spree!
Original Mock Up
I approached Marc… the curator of Art Boy with the idea and a picture of a crude mock up which (looking back) is laughable compared to the finished product. In fact I spent most of the time trying to talk Marc into talking me out of it…. The bottom line is, the thing I am making is Dangerous. The original idea was to produce the Nux and encase them in a permanent display box which would not easily be opened… but time constraints and the availability of materials meant I had to make cuts to some of the original ideas.
I let this project sit for a few weeks. The big skulls I had looked too goofy and I was in a holding pattern until the answer came to me in a dream (or something),  the smaller skulls I used were perfect and made the piece more aesthetically pleasing (to me anyway).

Production took a few weeks of trial and error, lots of dremeling and gluing and sanding to make the master as good as possible before casting began.

Mould Making
Casting begins
My original intention was to cold cast this piece in 3 kinds of metal and 1 in glow in the dark resin… Brass, Aluminum and Bronze… in an awesome twist of fate my casting supplier only had appropriate quantities of Aluminum. Considering my limited resources, saving almost $100 on art I could never sell is (to me) a win.

Cold Cast Aluminum

Sneak Peak of the Glow Version
In the end i produced 2 sets of knuckle dusters with display bases. By the time this entry goes live they will be sitting at the gallery awaiting display. As usual I have no idea what the reaction will be, but in truth it doesn’t matter much…. The goal of creating the art and having it displayed has been achieved… anything else is a bonus.

Next Week I will look at the opening night of the show and have a run down of the goings on.

Cheers

Read this first!

Hi! My name is J-F Tranquille. I am an artist from Melbourne Australia.

When I started to write a blog, I was torn about what to write and how to write it… to some extent I still am. I have done so many things and dipped my toe into so many scenes and styles of art, I was having difficulty consolidating it all and presenting it in a so-called "Artist" blog. Finally a friend of mine (A successful illustrator who’s partner writes a popular fashion blog) told me “Write it all”, Do long posts, short posts, anything you want…
So here we are. I am not going to say it’s perfect…. And it probably never will be, but it will be honest and fun.

The plan for this Blog is to do the following;

  • Showcase my artwork and talk about the artist experience… the references, the ideas, the failures and in some cases the successes. These may become long and sometimes rambling, but at the end of the day (in my experience) creating art is rarely ever clean and tidy… it’s a rather messy process from thought to creation… and if I do it right, I come out with a nice tidy piece at the end and no-one is the wiser (Until now)

  • Talk about Toys! I love toys! I have been collecting toys for the past few years (seriously) and I don’t show any signs of slowing down. The search for toys old and new is always an awesome trip, and its always great finding little bits of treasure while searching crappy markets stalls and 2nd hand shops. As well as collecting, I have begun to create my own figures…. Resin cast in small runs..

  • -Flash Backs! Seems to be a trend on the social medias… FlashBack Thursday or something. So I thought I might do a thing where I spotlight some of the past works I have done… be in Zines, early art, and even failed projects I have been a part of. Hey! write what you know right?

  • -Popular Culture…well, popular to me anyway. Movies, TV shows, Comics, Music  may make an appearance here as I am on the constant search for inspiration and entertainment.

And!

  • Anything else I can think of…

I hope you enjoy reading this blog as much as I enjoy writing it. My intention is to post weekly, And while this seems like a slightly ambitious task… I feel like I line must be drawn in the sand.

Along the way I would welcome any feedback and comments. I do what I do because it is challenging and it makes me happy, I present it to you with the intention of inspiring and informing.

Cheers
J-F
